Robert Smith is an associate professor of Divinity at Beeson Divinity school and he is preaching right now. Yesterday he preached at chapel and it was one of the best sermons I have ever heard. He spent about 2/3 of the time dealing with the text and his subject in the hermeneutical sense and the last third just tearing it up (homiletically). He uses that Sing-song style where his voice got very lyrical and he followed each sentence with a sort of grunt/laugh, “heh.” I felt kind of bad because I am sure that if he hadn’t been preaching to a chapel full of white-bread Presbyterians there would have been dancing in the isles and “amen’s” all around.Wednesday, October 12, 2005

Indeed! It was a privilidge to spend the day listening to him lecture. I assure you he is no less animated or engaging in the classroom! I hope you are renewed and refreshed at the revival! God Bless.
You should have heard Dr. Smith bless the congregation of the New Birth Baptist Churg in Miami on June 14th and 15th. Amazing!!! Holy ghost filled, no notes no papers, he is a true reflection of how God can use those who put him first!!
Dr. Smith just preached one of the most powerful messages I've heard at the Martin Luther King celebration at our church (one of the "white-bread Presbyterian churches" in Florida! ;-) By the end of his message everyone in the building was standing and clapping and "AMENS" could be heard throughout the audience of about 1,000...truly a touching and spirit-filled event. It was a memorable event, one which we all hope will not by Dr. Smith's last at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church, in Lecanto, FL!
Dr. Smith spoke at Oakland Baptist Churches "Terrific Tuesday" in August of 2011. His message was one of hope, and offered me a different view of a very familiar story in which I have used several times in my job as a therapist. His message was about Lazarus and Jesus taking his time on the road to Bethany to heal him. The crux of this to me was; "But when Jesus heard about it he said, "Lazarus's sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this." How many times I have tried to explain to the emotionally sick, depressed, anxious and addicted why God allows this to happen to them or a loved one. it usually ends in them being angry at God for their poor behavior. But to point out that God reserves the right to heal to Glorify His Son helps people to form some basis of acceptance. As they grow well I can remind them of how much God is Glorified by their good decisions as He weeps at their bad! The main point of the message was over when almost as an afterthought he asked "what would you do if the prodigal son did not return" and told of his son Tony's untimely death in a pizza parlor". not a dry eye could be seen in the church. I have reflected on his message and ability to show us a glimpse of Jesus... God Bless Dr. Smith and his family,
David Carpenter
